A spokesman from Buckingham Palace said:

“The Queen is being assessed at the King Edward VII’s Hospital, London, after experiencing symptoms of gastroenteritis.

“As a precaution, all official engagements for this week will regrettably be either postponed or cancelled.”

She had been due to visit Rome for a few days this week in a trip she was very much looking forwards to, but that has now had to be cancelled due to her illness.

Her stomach illness was first announced on Friday and she spent yesterday resting at Windsor.

She was also due to attend a military celebration in Wales during the country’s St David’s Day celebrations, but was forced to cancel these plans as well.

The Queen is 86-years-old and celebrates her 87th birthday next month on 21 April.
