GONZALES, Louisiana — State officials say more than 300 people were evacuated from the site of an explosion at Louisiana chemical plant southeast of Baton Rouge — but some stayed behind.

State police Capt. Doug Cain says 10 workers at the facility owned by The Williams Companies stayed in an explosive-proof control center as a fire raged after the Thursday morning blast in the Geismar community. Cain says the workers performed vital tasks, including shutting valves that rendered the plant safe.

One person was killed in Thursday’s blast. Officials say 73 were treated at area hospitals and a few were in critical condition.
